Wynwood Information

Midtown/Wynwood Miami is a neighborhood located north of Downtown Miami, popular for its warehouses converted to pieces of artworks. Living with and breathing in art is how residents describe life in Midtown/Wynwood, making it one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Miami.

Midtown/Wynwood is an art district located north of the neighborhoods of Downtown Miami and Overtown and roughly bounded by I-95 to the north and west, Florida East Coast Railway to the east, and North 20th Street to the south.

It is to the south of Design District, an equally artistic neighborhood in Miami.

Prior to becoming the art destination it is today, Midtown/Wynwood was only a warehouse district that succumbed to urban decay. Street arts, murals and graffiti were welcomed by the residents and have inspired developers to bring life to the forgotten town.

It was only in 2005 that the neighborhood received huge investment and redevelopment. In just several years, the once lonely district of Midtown/Wynwood breathed in new life and has since grown into an avenue for artists, innovators and creators.

Tony Goldman was instrumental in making Midtown/Wynwood an art mecca. Through him, a group of 30 artists from different cultural backgrounds visited the neighborhood in 2009 and created Wynwood Walls, which served as a huge art statement that has brought respect and attention to street art and graffiti.

This neighborhood next to Edgewater has two sub-districts: Wynwood Fashion District at West 5th Avenue and Wynwood Art District in its northern side.

Wynwood Fashion District has North 30th Street to its north, West 2nd Avenue to its east, I-95 to its west and North 23rd Street to the west. The sub-district has a main road that traverses the Northwest Fifth Avenue, which boasts of a wealth of major textile retailers and distributors.

The other sub-district – Wynwood Art District, bounded by the North 20th Street to the north, I-95 to the west, Northeast First Avenue to the east and North 36th Street to the south, is home to more than 70 art galleries, studios and museums. The district hosts an art walk every second Saturday of the month when studios and art galleries welcome the public to view collections of art by renowned artists.

Residents of Midtown/Wynwood benefit from Miami’s free trolley service within the city limits, Metrobus, Metromover’s School Board Station to its south and Miami Metrorail at Allapattah.

Wynwood has two parks: Roberto Clemente Park and Robert E. Lee Park but the latter is for the exclusive use of Jose de Diego Middle School.

Things to Do

Midtown/Wynwood is also a place to party. Bardot is among the first to pop in the neighborhood popular for featuring up and coming rappers and superstar DJs. House and techno enthusiasts can be seen heading out to The Electric Pickle Company, a known favourite of international DJs.

The community is teeming with a number of cultural institutions including the Rubell Family Collection and Margulies Collection. Rubell Family Collection is among the United States’ top provate collection of modern art, with a huge assortment of photography, paintings, sculptures and conceptual art. The gallery features works by Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons and Cindy Sherman to name a few.

The neighborhood may be rich in arts and culture, but gastronomic experience in the neighborhood does not fail to impress as well.

GK Bistronomie serves Peruvian-inspired cuisines that carefully match the interior design of the place, an artwork in itself. Beaker and Gray is a craft cocktail bar that offers globally inspired menu. A previous Kickstarter project, Zak the Baker whips up fresh from the oven soups and sandwiches that are kosher-guaranteed.
