Southwest Ranches is a town of Broward County, located about 15 miles southwest of Fort Lauderdale. The rural town is known as an equestrian community along the eastern edge of the Everglades.
The small community was incorporated in 2000 in an effort to preserve its rural atmosphere. With the huge number of horse ranches and its southwestern location in the Broward County, residents have adapted the name Southwest Ranches.
Its boundaries include Sheridan Street to the south, Griffin Road to the north, SR 27 to the west and Flamingo Road to the east. It has the neighborhoods of Weston to the north, Cooper City to the east, Pembroke Pines to the south. It has the Everglades bounding it to the west.
Before its incorporation, the area was once requested to become part of the Pembroke Pines. This has caused the citizens to practice their right of forming their own city and identity. They have requested for their independence which resulted to its incorporation as Southwest Ranches. Through this, the town is the 30th incorporated area of Broward County.
The residents of Southwest Ranches have worked tirelessly on keeping the rural lifestyle of the area. The lands are filled with nurseries, farms, grazing animals.
The town adapts a strict zoning that are mainly agricultural and residential. To allow for maximal enjoyment of residents, the town also has zoning for open spaces and recreational areas.
The town is protected by the Davie Police Department and is served by the SWR Volunteer Fire Department. The Town of Davie also provides Southwest Ranches its Emergency Medical Services.
A County Bus serves the community but most residents drive their own vehicles. The nearest airport is the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Miami International Airport is half an hour away from the town.
