Little Haiti is a neighborhood in Miami that is known by many names. It is also known as Little River, Edison and by its historical name of Lemon City.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is distinguished by its borders that run along the NW/NE 54th Street, NW/NE 80th Street and Interstate 95.

As its name goes, Little Haiti serves as a residential enclave for hundreds of Haitian immigrant residents along with other residents from the Caribbean.

Little Haiti got its name when activist and community leader, Viter Juste, wrote a Miami Herald piece describing the community as a “Little Port-au-Prince,” which was eventually shortened to Little Haiti. It was in May 2016 that Miami commissioners voted to change its neighborhood name to Little Haiti from Lemon City/Little River.

The French-Creole influence is evident in the restaurants, nightlife and every day events. Commercial establishments often have vibrant colors depicting the lively lifestyle of its residents.

Just last year, the neighborhood was chosen as one of the selected economic development site that aims to re-energize and revitalize one of Miami’s pioneer commercial corridors for both residents and tourists.
