Liberty City is a neighborhood in Miami with the highest concentration of Blacks in South Florida. It is recognized by the Miami city government as Model City, but residents fondly refer to their home as the Liberty City neighborhood.

The Neighborhood

Liberty City is bounded by the NW 27th Avenue to the west, NW 54th Street to the south, NW 79th Street to the north and the Interstate 95 to the east.

It is adjacent to the Haitian community of Little Haiti and the neighborhoods of Brownsville, Allapattah and Wynwood.

The community traces its history from the days of the Great Depression when then President Franklin Roosevelt approved the construction of a housing project along the Liberty Square. During its early years, Liberty City was one of the more successful neighborhoods as a middle-income community.

It was in 1964 when the Civil Rights Act forced welfare-dependent families and low-income elderly moved into the community. The dramatic migration pushed the higher income families to move out and find better living situations in nearby areas such as Miami Gardens and Florida City.

To date, the city is home to many locals who pioneered the hip hop music and sports talents.

The Miami Metrorail, with stations at Brownsville and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Plaza, serves the residents of the area.

Things To Do

Liberty City is home to several expansive parks and mini parks that families can enjoy. Charles Hadley park features a playground, baseball and football fields. Other parks within the community include Sherdavia Jenkins Peace Park, Alonzo Kelly Park and African Square Park.
