The Neighborhood

The area had been home to several scattered settlers as early as the mid-1880s. The first documented settlers were the families of Frank Sheen and George Butler, railway employees who arrived in the area in 1896.

The historic beachfront community of Pompano Beach was named after the pompano fish that lives off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It was said that Sheen wrote down “Pompano Beach,” while surveying the area as it was his meal for dinner time.

By 1908, the area was incorporated to become the Town of Pompano. By 1920s, during the Florida land boom, the area was greatly developed. Due to the immense growth after the Second World War, the area was incorporated to become the City of Pompano Beach in 1947.

As it is a tourist destination, the number of people in the area doubles during winter season.

Pompano Beach occupies the northeastern area of the Broward County, extending from the State Road A1A and Terra Mar Drive towards the Hillsboro Inlet. It includes about 3 miles of beachfront.

It is bounded to the northeast by the neighborhoods of Lighthouse Point and Hillsboro Beach, to the north by Deerfield Beach, to the west by Coconut Creek, to the southwest by the Margate and North Lauderdale communities, to the southeast is the Lauderdale by the Sea and to the south is Fort Lauderdale.

By looking at its boundaries, residents of Pompano Beach clearly have great accessibility to successful neighborhoods, which have flourishing commercial and residential establishments.

Things To Do

Pompano Beach has a wealth of beautiful and well-maintained parks including the Community Park that features volleyball courts and BBQ grills.

The community also boasts of an Aquatic Center with an Olympic-sized pool. The community also has the Air Park Jogging Track and Canine Corner Dog Park, Houston/Sworn Aquatic Center and Emma Lou Olson Civic Center.

The city also hosts the longest running outdoor Pompano Beach Seafood Festival where great food, shopping and music are celebrated with the ocean as its background. Other festivals held in the community include St. Patrick’s Irish Festival, Pompano Beach Holiday Boat Parade, Annual Nautical Flea Market and St. Coleman’s Italian Festival.

Pompano Beach has two malls, the Festival Flea Market Mall and the open air mall of Pompano Citi Centre.

Avid golfers can also practice their swings at the beautiful greens of the Pompano Beach Golf Course. The neighborhood also has a number of parks such as Kester Park, Harbors Edge Park, Cresthaven Park, and Scott Myers Memorial Park.
