The Neighborhood

The affluent community of Hobe Sound occupies the southern Martin County adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. It covers the coast between the4 Jonathan Dickinson State Park and Port Salerno but excluding the Jupiter Island.

Hobe Sound got its name from Jobe Indians, who were among the first to settle in the area. It is said that the first settlers came when a British ship from Jamaica sank near the Jupiter Inlet. In it were 25 crew and passengers, including Jonathan Dickinson.

Development in the area started when Henry Flagler built his railroad, which passed through Hobe Sound. This led to the birth of tourism and commercial establishments that improved the economy.

The town boasts of great golf courses within and nearby. This has attracted the likes of Tiger Woods and other celebrities like Burt Reynolds and Celine Dion who own properties in Hobe Sound.

The quiet community has been part of several counties before Martin County. It used to be a part of the Orange County from 1824 to 1844 then Brevard County from 1844 to 1866. From 1866 to 1909, Hobe Sound was part of the Dade County. It was then moved to Palm Beach County from 1909 to 1925.

Hobe Sound is a car-dependent town as there are no fixed-route services within the community. The Community Coach, the only public transport available, offers curb-to-curb, advanced reservation ride sharing services.

The Florida East Coast Railway also runs through the community along the A1A, with at-grade crossings at Gleason Street, Bridge Road, Pettway Street, Crossrip Street, Osprey Street and A1A.
